Are you amazed by the performances of some of the surfers at VAG? We are too! That's why the event committee of Surf Grand Montréal, in collaboration with Eaux Vives Québec, organized a longboard competition.

A little throwback

Did you know that river surfing competitions have already taken place in Montreal? Indeed :


  • In 2007, Banana Sundae competition allowed shortboarders to showcase their skills at the Habitat 67 wave.

  • In 2021 and 2022, the best longboarders were able to compete at Vague à Guy during the Mtl Logfest.

The Classique Vague à Guy explained

In addition to impressing spectators, the Vague à Guy Classic aims to promote our city as a top destination for river surfing and to create a connection between the competitors, spectators, passersby, and the entire neighborhood.


In other words, the event aim at :

  • Highlighting local talent

  • Sharing our passion and surf culture

  • Strengthening the community

Event format

Our jury has already selected 32 surfers for the competition, including 16 men and 16 women. Surfers had until August 23 to submit a video of their performances at VAG. The selection was therefore based on these recordings.


Competition format :

  • The competition will consist of a series of heats, each lasting about 20 minutes, starting with the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and then the finals.

  • Each competitor will have the opportunity to perform 4 times on the wave for a duration of 45 seconds each.


In addition to the competition itself, the committee has prepared several surprises for you :

  • Kiosks run by local surf community members

  • A stage dedicated to performances by musical artists

  • Food court area


If you’re passionate about surfing, you simply can't miss the Vague à Guy Classic, which, hopefully, will become a true classic in the future !

How to encourage such events ?

All funds raised during the day will go to the Surf Grand Montréal association. So, when you order a beer, you'll be contributing to the financial growth of the association. You will also have the opportunity to make a voluntary donation on-site. The donations will support all of Surf Grand Montréal's needs, whose mission is to develop, raise awareness, and represent the river surfing community of Greater Montreal.
